Now that you have decided to begin trading in the Foreign Exchange (Forex) markets, it is time for you to consider the essential tools for becoming successful Forex trader. These tools will fall into three categories: hardware, software, and the proper mindset.
Hardware
The hardware requirements for trading on the Forex are a personal computer and a reliable high speed Internet connection.
The computer that you use to trade on the Forex can be either your home computer or, if you customarily conduct business at several locations or travel frequently, a laptop or notebook model. Regardless of which type or types of computer you use, there are several things to keep in mind.
First of all, your computer must have enough random access memory (RAM, but usually referred to as “memory”) to handle the relatively large amounts of data that will be processed when you are connected to your Forex trading account. For computers manufactured within the last few years this usually isn’t a problem but older computers, particularly older laptops or notebooks, should be checked against your trading account’s minimum requirements.
Next, your computer’s processor speed should be at least 750 MHz in order to handle the often substantial numerical calculations associated with data accessible from your trading account. Again, this can be verified by checking your account’s minimum requirements.
Finally, you must have a reliable high speed Internet connection. In Forex trading, there is no such thing as “too fast” a connection. As an absolute minimum you should have a DSL or cable modem that can provide at least 150Mb per second of both incoming and outgoing data. If you regularly use a laptop or notebook computer to access your Forex trading account from different locations, you should have either a built in wireless modem or an external wireless card. Again, practically all recently manufactured computers have built-in wireless capability.
Software
Having the proper software for Forex trading will be the least of your concerns because it will be provided free when you open your trading account. To maximize the success of your trading strategy, you should take advantage of the online tutorials that are usually offered with each software “package.“
Additionally, there are many software programs that you can use to help you both plan and implement your trading strategy. These programs vary in their “user friendliness” as well as their utility in helping you plan your trading strategy. However, it is always best to first master the software that comes with your trading account.
The mindset of a successful Forex Trader
It goes without saying that we are living in turbulent economic times; where four and five hundred point swings in the world’s stock markets have become the rule rather than the exception. The successful Forex trader will see such uncertainty in the world’s financial markets as an opportunity.
The key to becoming a successful Forex trader cannot be purchased or sold. You may have the best computer and the best software available, but these items alone will not make you a success. A successful trader is the trader with the knowledge of what is driving the Forex markets and a strong commitment to utilizing that knowledge. In other words, you must develop the proper mindset.
The mindset of a dedicated Forex trader includes flexibility in your trading strategy. If market conditions are moving in one direction, you will adjust your strategy to take advantage of those moves. To take full advantage of such movements you must learn to anticipate them and, more importantly, you must understand why they are occurring. This will require that you make time in your daily routine to read or watch a comprehensive review of the international news, and to pay special attention to the financial segments or sections.
Finally, as a successful Forex trader you will be the first to admit that you “haven’t seen it all” and that you will never stop learning about the factors make the markets move. The first footstep on the road to smart trading is to realize that you will never stop learning and that the “bells and whistles” of modern technology will never replace simple human judgment.
